Peka Science Year 5

Date
:
22-6-2010
Activity Code
:
5 /4 / 4.1 / 3
Theme
:
Investigating Force and Energy
Topic
:
4 Heat
Learning Outcomes
:
4.1.3 measure temperature using the correct technique.
Aim
:
To investigate the relationship between the time and
the temperature of water when is heated and cooled
Apparatus
:
Lighter,labogas,water,wire gauze,glass rod,tripod stand,
retort stand and clamp,250ml beaker,stopwatch,thermometer.
Method
:
  1. Set up the apparatus  as shown in the picture.
  2. Use the  thermometer to measure themperature of water.
  3. Start the stopwatch and heat the water at the same time.
  4. Stir the water using a glass rod.
  5. Measure the themperature every 2 minutes
for ten minutes.
  1. Record your observations in the table below
as shown.
  1. Turn off the labogas and start your stopwatch
at the same time.
  1. Measure the temperature every 2 minutes
for 10 minutes.
  1. Record your observations in the table.

Discussion
:

1. How does the temperature change when water is heated?
    Increasing .

2.Give an inference based on the answer you given in question 1.
    The water gains heat.

3. How does the temperature change when water is cooled? Why?
Decreasing . The water loses heat.

3. In this investigation, the things you:
i) what to change : time
ii) what to measure : temperature of water when is heated and cooled
iii) what to keep the same : volume of water

Conclusion   :    When water is heated, it gains heat and its temperature increases.
When water is cooled, it loses heat and its temperature decreases.
